Jewelry workshop: behind the curtains Le Sens du Détail feat. L’Atelier de Benoit – Geneva

Fine Jewelry workshops seldom feature noticeable storefronts. Rather, they will be found behind closed doors, down a corridor or nested in a sunny courtyard – this is where the magic happens, thanks to the delicate work of craftsmen. Before being exhibited in plain view, in bright shop windows, before being cherished by elegant ladies – the craft of jewels starts in these shops. An exclusive realm, where patience, expert gestures and meticulous work are king. Jewelers’ talent give life to designers’ fancy creations – but this is all out of sight.

Confident words always come easy for subjects we are comfortable with – therefore, le Sens du Détail offers to lift a corner of the veil and open the doors of jewelry workshoyp L’Atelier de Benoit in Geneva. There, HBJO professionals are allowed to experience an immersive day of practice among craftsmen. Participants will oversee the manufacturing of each jewelry piece, thus improving their technical knowledge of the craft. Spending a full day among jewelry makers is a rare privilege, accessible only to some hand-picked happy few – themselves being professionals of the jewelry industry.

Welcome aboard an exclusive world of refinement.

The arts and craft of a master jeweler

Upon entering l’Atelier de Benoit, the visitor is first struck by a lively and busy atmosphere. Music playing on the radio, tools clinking and clanking in a joyful chant, and conversations over – this is the essence of working days.

Benoit and co-workers constantly exchange ideas and suggestions, enriching one another while adjusting or polishing the finest pieces. Meticulous work is key to perfection: here, liquid gold pours gently into a carefully chosen mould. There, sparkly gemstones bounce on their velvet bed until being snapped – the jeweler will then set them into a bigger frame. Tossed on an antique wooden desk, handmade pastel sketches highlight the elegant curve of a bracelet, the sleek silhouette of a necklace or the delicate finesse of a pair of earrings.

From a sketch to finished pieces, all operations are bound by talent and patience to reach perfection. The jeweler’s hands repeat an infinite ballet of precision and expertise, shaping raw materials into pure bliss.

An immersive day at the jeweler’s shop is key to dissect, understand and closely monitor all steps of the jewelry making process, thus embedding this crucial phase into a bigger picture of market and industry flows. An immersive day is key to become fluent with the vernacular jargon of jewelry craftsmanship, getting acquainted to gestures and tools, to feel and breathe what a workshop is like. Beyond the simple experience of being a plain observer or witness theory-put-in-practice, attendants are invited to craft their own piece of jewelry.

Under Benoit’s supervision, participants get to manipulate and use specific saws, pliers or files and, when the day is over – each participant is rewarded with their own creation: ring or bracelet, which one will you make?

Atelier de Benoît

A passion for jewelry that turns teams into proficient and efficient staff

Beyond that sheer pleasure where discovery meets art and passion, the immersive days enable jewelry professionals to reach the next level – whether sales forces or product managers, they ultimately better comprehend and fully apprehend all the mechanisms behind the jewelry market. Broadening coworkers’ range of skills by adding more expertise is a token to better serve their customers – they will now introduce unique jewelry pieces with increased passion and emotion. For they have manipulated the ad-hoc tools, replicated the craftsmen’s gestures and themselves crafted rings or bracelets, their thorough understanding of featured jewels transpires in the way they handle customer relation – again, confident words always come easy for subjects we are comfortable with.

Product managers strengthen their knowledge – technical skills and know-how will have no more secrets – they oversee the full spectrum of design to manufacturing, hence pushing back their creative boundaries. Last but not least, the art of jewel making shall not be reduced to precision only.

Each of the craftsman’s moves has one objective: carving and shaping beauty, share excellence through a delicate bracelet or a thin ring. This passion infuses everywhere, from the slick touch of polished metal to shimmering gemstones that will glade on nude skin. First and foremost, le Sens du Détail has teamed up with L’Atelier de Benoit with one common purpose: sharing a devouring passion – hence making the backbone for these immersive days.
